PCC Natural Markets, Issaquah WA

To find out more about this co-op, check out http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/locations/is.html

If you have some local picks for Issaquah, let us all know!  Write a comment with your advice…Good food, good brew, good fun, good shops, good folks…

PCC.  The big one.  If you know little of this co-op, it is tempting to lump them all together.  We went in with this in mind.  They are all stores of the same giant co-op right?  Not so much…

Now, Issaqua did not do much to dispel this notion.  It is in a mall area, near lots of chains.  It looks shiny and very chain like.  We went in and were a bit overwhelmed (coming from an average co-op perspective).  It was a fast paced, natural food store on par with any Whole Foods that we have been in.  Lots of produce (with lots of local), big deli, big cooking class room (found out that PCC offers tons of classes to the public at their stores…saw one going on and it was packed).

It took a while to find someone to talk to that did not look extremely busy…well, she was but I approached her anyway.  She thought that maybe I should talk to the central office but since we were looking for local flavor, she hooked me up with Susan.  Susan gave us the low down on Redmond, so gets the spotlight in that post.  For Issaquah, she hooked us up with Leif…and he saved the day.  Once you get a person in a co-op, you know where you are.  And you know it is a co-op.  He breathed life into the town…he (and Susan) also made us feel welcome and we truly thank them both!  PCC, you have some great folks…

Here is what they advised:

Mountain Biking.  Leif is a biker.  Not the Harley type…the fat tire, get muddy type.  He said that Issaqua was positioning itself as a destination for mountain biking…he said their was a great park (Doofy?  I don’t have the name right…help!)  Please add in specifics if you have more!

They both spoke a lot of outdoor recreation from the state parks to the wilderness areas.  They also advised the Farmers’ market on Saturday.

Local Food and Brew:  Issaqua Brew House, Noodle Boat Thai, Jacks Steakhouse, Front Street Cafe

We had lunch…and it was great.  Soup and pizza made at the store.  If you looked…they had the co-op messages through the store…but did they have a monoculture?  9 identical stores and no multi-flavor of the neighborhoods?  Well…we went to find out…on to Redmond.

About Co-op Traveler

The Co-op Traveler is for...folks that seek out local food, folks and fun. Our work is based on the premise that if there is a food co-op in a community, there must be some cool things going on there. We are traveling the country (and ultimately the world!) to experience these places and share them with you...so you can create your local adventure in these places too... We are food co-op geeks for sure...but we can't help it. We are big into great local food (we co-own LIFE Certified Organic Farm) and great local businesses (we co-own Nature's Crossroads seed company) and the local scene (we talk to many, love to hike, bike, kayak...). So we seek these places/things out wherever we go...
